EPCAMR has mapped where Pennsylvania’s abandoned mine lands and mine drainage impaired streams fall against the service areas of the state’s 158 watershed groups. The service areas come from data collected through community outreach by POWR and compiled by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council; the AML and AMD data come from PA DEP and EPCAMR. It’s now in the Library, as a five page map and summary, and as a workbook with every group’s numbers.
Watershed group service areas cover about 35 percent of Pennsylvania, and they hold a little less than half of the problem: 49 percent of the AML problem areas, and 45 percent of the stream miles impaired by mine drainage. The rest sits where no group’s service area reaches. That’s not a measure of anyone’s effort. It shows where the network’s work is concentrated today, and where it could grow.

Need the numbers or a map for your own watershed? EPCAMR can pull them for you; ask through the Contact page. And if your group’s service area is drawn wrong, or your group is missing, tell us through the Share page, and we’ll pass it on to POWR and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.
