Summary #

Operation Scarlift was a Pennsylvania state program from the 1960s and 1970s that produced studies and remediation work on areas impacted by historic mining. The digitized Scarlift reports remain a valuable reference for watershed groups doing background research. This page explains what Scarlift was and points to the report collection in the AML-Connect Resource Library.

Operation Scarlift was a Pennsylvania state program that operated in the 1960s and 1970s. Its purpose was to remediate the environmental damage from historic mining practices, including mine fires, abandoned strip mine areas, open deep mine shafts, burning refuse banks, and mine drainage.

In addition to direct remediation work, Operation Scarlift produced numerous studies of areas impacted by old mining practices. While this information is decades old, it still provides valuable background for groups assessing their watersheds today.
