Summary
Environmental education extends well beyond formal schooling. Volunteer monitoring programs, nature centers, citizen science initiatives, and community organizations all provide pathways for adults and community members to engage with watershed health and AML/AMD issues in Pennsylvania.
Volunteer Monitoring Programs #
Pennsylvania’s Citizens’ Volunteer Monitoring Program involves more than 140 groups actively monitoring surface and groundwater resources throughout the state. Adults and children alike participate. The program produces data useful for watershed assessments and restoration planning. Contact the DEP Bureau of Clean Water for current program contacts and a teacher’s manual. See also the Developing a Monitoring Plan page for how to structure a volunteer monitoring program.
PENNVAST (Pennsylvania Volunteers in Action for Streams and Tributaries) coordinates volunteer stream monitoring networks across the Commonwealth. Contact PENNVAST through PA DEP’s Bureau of Clean Water.
AMD and Art #
AMD and Art is a unique educational program based in the Johnstown, PA area that blends science, landscape design, community history, and citizen participation in the design and construction of AMD treatment systems. The project connects environmental remediation to community identity and arts programming — one of the most distinctive approaches to AMD public education in the country. Visit amdandart.org for current program information and on-site project updates.
